Space Shuttle Gaza

Diwan Ghazza’s Amateur Astronomers club held their second event last Monday. The theme revolved around NASA’s Space Shuttle Program. Dr.Suleiman Baraka selected ‘’The Dream Is Alive’’ documentary from his own library to share with us. He choose this film with a goal in mind. He wanted us to watch how the collective human force focused on one goal can go beyond anyone’s imagination, and the sky is not the limit and that in fact, the possibilities are limitless. He asked us before presenting the film to ‘’Give your imagination a chance today with the Dream Is Alive.’’ And we did.
As soon as the film started silence filled the air as everyone locked their eyes on the screen eagerly watching the magnificent human power that worked tirelessly day and night to achieve one goal. We were amazed to witness such experience unfolded before our eyes. We watched how astronauts are extensively trained for years before they are put into orbit. And when the count down for the shuttle launch reached Go and the shuttle was making its way to space we gazed in absolute astonishment at the magnificent of it all. I for one couldn’t help but wish I was on it.

‘’I want you to observe the human behavior with zero error in zero gravity.’’
 –Dr.Suleiman Baraka

The film featured one of the Space Shuttle’s missions and we witnessed the intense nerves that filled the control room back on Earth, we watched as the Space Shuttle Challenger flawlessly captured the Solar Max satellite. Another breathtaking moment filled our atmosphere as we watched the mission.

The second part of the event included a friend and former Space Shuttle Engineer for NASA who joined our Conversation via Skype.
She shared:
‘’I felt like a part of history and the future. This feeling is what keeps me going everyday. To work for NASA you feel like you’re a part of something bigger than yourself.’’

Finally, we had an Open Discussion with astrophysicist Dr.Baraka and the audience shared their questions and thoughts regarding the documentary.
